Vizianagaram: The government of Andhra Pradesh is giving top priority to conduct the Centenary celebrations of Maharaja Music College here. This is the oldest music college in the entire south India established by Maharajah of Vizianagaram Vijayarama Gajapathi in 1919.

Iconic musicians, artists, singers like Harikatha Pithamaha Adibhatla Narayana Dasu, violinist Dwaram Venkata Swamy Naidu and many more worked here as principal.

Saluri Rajeswara Rao (music director) playback singers Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao and P Suseela have close association with this college. The college is completing its 100 years of service in the aspect of music.

Thousands of students were produced from here and proved themselves in various platforms. Singers like Malavika and others became stars in film industry. The instrument players are working with various music directors.

The government is going to celebrate the 100 years function for three days. It would be kick-started on February 3 and concludes on February 5. Already the renovation works are going in war foot and the heritage building is going to be facelifted.

The new statues of Vijayarama Gajapathi Raju and others would be erected in the college premises. A big Shobhayatra will be organised with various musical instruments from Vizianagaram fort on February 3.

The committee has been working on the celebrations for the past two months. Musicians from all over India will attend the programme.

Collector M Harijawaharlal has reviewed the progress of the works with concerned authorities and directed them to organise the prestigious programme in a grand manner. Even, he visited the college and observed the works and enquired the status of the works.

College Principal M Anuradha Parasuram stated “It’s my pleasure to organise the 100 years function of the college. It is very fortunate to be here as the college had produced thousands of musicians, singers.

They are glittering in various sectors and fields. All those students would come here and participate in the programme.”

Burada Srinivasa Rao, general secretary of old students’ association of the college, stated “This college is our treasure of house of ancient musicians.

We need to protect it and to publicise the prestigious programme. We will make full efforts to make it a grand success. These three days would be in a festive mode.”
