Visakhapatnam: In order to ensure supply of drinking water equally, timely and without distribution losses, a new project being initiated by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in the city.

The new project Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) will be introduced as part of the Smart City initiatives. The Greater Visakhapatnam Smart City Corporation Limited (GVSCCL) has accepted to introduce the project. Under the SCADA project, the entire water supply system will be tracked and centrally monitored digitally.

The SCADA project was drafted to address various issues and problems in the drinking water supply in the entire city. Under the project, all the key officials, employees, and workers who are engaged in the water supply will have direct interaction with each other and a centrally located digitised cell will be monitored the supply system.

By using advanced technology and various digitised equipment, the project will minimise the wastage of water and supply the waters with an equal ratio to all the areas. According to the officials, the cost of the project is about Rs 90 crore and once the project commissioned, the GVMC could save Rs 10 crore in drinking water supply wing. The project will be incorporated with the present Command Control Centre of the GVMC.

“Though the GVSCCL has accepted to take up the project, more issues to be addressed for implementation of project and still we have to work to reduce the cost of the project,” a senior official of Water Supply Wing of GVMC said.
