Toyota unveils new engines for next gen biggies. The new engines are set to debut on the 2016 Toyota Hilux pickup truck which will be making its world premiere on 21st May 2015 in Thailand.

Toyota has debuted its all-new diesel engine range at the 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria which will be found in the next generation Innova and Fortuner Toyota has revealed its new range of diesel engines, termed the GD series at the 36th International Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria.

The new engines are set to debut on the 2016 Toyota Hilux pickup truck which will be making its world premiere on 21st May 2015 in Thailand. The new four-cylinder diesel engine comes in two different sizes: a 2.4-litre engine that has been codenamed as 2GD-FTV and a 2.8-litre engine that gets the code 1GD-FTV respectively.

The new engines will later find their way onto the next generation Fortuner SUV and Innova MPV, which are both based on the Hilux pickup and are expected to launch in India next year. The latest GD family of diesel engines will replace the current line of KD series that are known as the 2KD-FTV for the 2.5-litre version and 1KD-FTV for the 3.0-litre version respectively.

A few technologies like common-rail fuel injection, intercooler and the variable geometry turbo from the older engines have been carried over to the newer ones. However, the latest engines get the new ESTEC technology (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion), that is said to provide increased fuel efficiency along with better acceleration figures.

They also get a new transmission system with the current 5-speed manual and automatic ones being upgraded to 6-speed manual and automatic transmission. The more powerful 1GD diesel engine can produce 177 HP (which could vary for different markets) and 450 Nm of torque when equipped with the automatic transmission.

The 3.0-litre 1KD engine on the other hand produces about 171 HP and 360 Nm of torque. Whereas, the 2.4-litre 2GD generates 160 HP and 400 Nm of torque as compared to 144 HP and 343 Nm of torque generated in the 2.5-litre 2KD diesel engine respectively.
