Renault Kwid plant to manufacture 1600 cars per day

From April, the factory will be manufacturing 1,600 cars per day in three shifts.In a bid to reduce the long waiting period for the Renault Kwid, Renault-Nissan Alliance has been increasing the production capacity at its Oragadam plant in a phased manner. ET reports that the facility will start running on third shift from April 1, thereby increasing the rate of production significantly.

As of now, the facility produces 1,000 cars a day across two shifts. Renault vehicles (Kwid, Duster, Lodgy, Pulse, Scala and Fluence) make up for about 80% of the produce while the rest is accounted for by Nissan models such as Micra, Terrano, Sunny and Datsun Go series. With the addition of third shift, the production rate would be scaled up to 1,600 units a day and the Kwid will be the biggest beneficiary.

The addition of third shift is estimated to generate 2,000 new direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs (at the vendors). Recruitment at both end are said to be in progress. Renault is hoping to produce 10,000 units of the Kwid per month once the additional shift kicks in. This would reduce its waiting period from the current 6-7 months to around 3 months.

It’s to be noted that Renault Kwid 1.0L AMT variant and Datsun Redi-Go (Kwid-based) small car are set to be launched in the coming months. So, increase in the production capacity is crucial.
