HMIL, the country’s second largest car manufacturer and largest exporter laid its factory foundation stone in India on 6th May 1996. Operations here started in September 1998 in Sriperumbudur near Chennai. It was Hyundai’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside Korea. The MPFI engine based tallboy Santro (now discontinued) was the first Hyundai car in India.

At the 20th Foundation Day celebrations of HMIL, Managing Director, Young Key Koo spoke about increasing Hyundai’s customer outreach with the launch of 2 new products every year to expand its footprint here. Growth will be supported by GDSI and digital showrooms, automated workshops, Experience Hyundai programmes for brand and product, sponsorships, and more.

The HMIL manufacturing facility is being upgraded and automated periodically. Investments at present are at 3.1 billion USD. Vendor investment stands at 1.5 billion USD. He further adds this as an important milestone for the company. The dream of transforming the Indian auto industry with contemporary products began 20 years earlier and has come to fruition today. Hyundai has also furthered the Made in India ethos seamlessly with India being an important export hub for HMC. Through this journey, the Indian customer has been immensely supportive.

Top management of HMIL, vendors and dealer partners, received a baton-scroll from Mr. YK Koo, as a token of their commitment to aid Hyundai to become a market leader. HMIL has launched a new logo to illustrate its 20-year journey in India. HMIL will organize a grand carnival for employees at the factory premises this weekend.
