The car will be heavily localized to arrive at a competitive price point. In a recent interview with Economic Times, Young Key Koo, Hyundai India’s new CEO, has revealed that the company’s Ford EcoSport rival will be launched in 2016. The Hyundai compact SUV which was previewed by the Carlino (HND-14) design concept at the 2016 Auto Expo will be powered by a 1.0-litre engine (most likely a petrol unit).

The 1.0-litre motor will be a direct injection turbocharged mill with performance credentials at par with those of the EcoSport’s famed 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit. The company’s existing 1.4-litre power plant is expected to be the diesel engine of choice.

Going by the Carlino concept, the compact SUV from Hyundai will be a bold, boxy and youthful crossover that will tuck under the crucial 4-metre length limit. The 5-seater will be positioned below the Creta and is expected to borrow several components from the Grand i10 and Elite i10 to keep the costs in check.

Further details are scarce as of now but we can expect high levels of localization to arrive at a competitive price point. In addition to Ford EcoSport, the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV will be locking horns with the likes of Mahindra TUV300, NuvoSport, and Maruti Vitara Brezza.
