Given that SUVs are well liked across the world, it’s only sensible for the Italian automaker to spin off a mid-size SUV based on the quirky pickup’s platform.

Autossegredos reports that according to its sources, the company has asked its development team in Brazil to expedite the Toro SUV project.

The publication also claims that the SUV will be available in 5- and 7-seat variants. The styling from the front end all the way up to B-pillar would remain faithful to the pickup truck’s lines.

The interior too expected to be carried forward from the load carrying sibling but one can expect more creature comforts to make it on board the SUV. More details would trickle down as the development progresses. The vehicle is expected to be ready in about a year’s time.

Like the Toro pikcup, the SUV will be powered by the 1.8-litre E.torQ flex fuel engine and 2.0-litr Multijet diesel engines. The former is good for 139 PS on ethanol while the oil burner pumps out a healthy 170 PS. The flex fuel engine is reported to available only in 4×2 configuration with a 6-speed Aisin automatic gearbox whereas the range-topping diesel can be had either in 4×2 or 4×4 configuration, both mated to a ZF 9-speed AT.

If at all Fiat plans to bring this car to India in the future, it would lock horns with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and so on.
