Volkswagen Tiguan Vs Hyundai Tucson Vs Audi Q3 Vs BMW X1 Vs Mercedes-Benz GLA
Currently, the Tiguan primarily competes with the Hyundai Tucson, however, due to its high price tag it lands in the territory of luxury SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. So should you buy the Tiguan or should pick one
Volkswagen has finally launched the second-generation Tiguan in the Indian market. The new SUV comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine coupled to a 7-speed automatic transmission and lots of new features. While the Comfortline variant is priced at Rs 27.98 lakh, the Highline variant is priced at Rs 31.38 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
Space And Size
With 4486mm of length and 1672mm height, the Tiguan is the longest and tallest car here. However, when it comes to wheelbase, the Mercedes-Benz GLA stands first with 2699mm, and the Tiguan stands second with 2677mm. Both the Hyundai Tucson and the BMW X1 have a wheelbase of 2670mm, and the Audi Q3 has 2603mm.
Performance
The Tiguan only comes with a diesel engine, so let's compare the diesel engine specifications of all SUVs.
Apart from the Mercedes, all other cars in this comparison are powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine. The Mercedes has a slightly bigger, 2.1-litre engine; however, interestingly it is the one with lowest output figures - 137.9PS and 300Nm. The most powerful car in this comparison is the BMW X1 with 192.7PS of power and 400Nm of torque. Surprisingly, the BMW also has the highest claimed fuel efficiency of 20.68kmpl. The Hyundai Tucson also has admirable performance figures, 185PS and 400Nm.
While the Audi Q3 and the Hyundai Tucson come with both manual and automatic transmissions on offer, the rest of the SUVs only have an automatic transmission. The Tucson only comes with two-wheel-drive powertrain whereas the Tiguan has standard four-wheel drive powertrain. All the other cars have optional four-wheel drive variants.
Features
All of the cars here have similar features. They do come with electrically adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, push button stop/start, side and curtain airbags and large display for the infotainment system. However, the Tucson misses the sunroof but has dual zone climate control. The top variant of the Tiguan comes with a panoramic sunroof and has 3-zone climate control. Well, one thing is for sure: the new Tiguan does come loaded with features up to the brim and can give tough competition to the luxury SUVs in this comparison. It even has heated front seats with memory function and front fog lamps with cornering lights. While all cars have LED headlights, the Mercedes has bi-xenon headlamps.
Price
The Tucson is the most affordable car here. The top variant of the Tucson is around Rs 3 lakh cheaper than the entry-level variant of the Tiguan. However, while the Tucson is 2WD, the Tiguan is 4WD. Moreover, the Tiguan also has additional features and its top-spec variant retails at 31.38 lakh. The luxury SUVs from BMW, Audi and Merc start north of Rs 31 lakh. But the entry level variants do miss a lot of features. If you want a fully loaded luxury SUV with 4WD powertrain, the prices can go as far as Rs 41.9 lakh.
The Tiguan does offer all the features and 4WD powertrain at a competitive price as compared to its rivals here, but what is does not provide is the snob-value of owning a "big brand" luxury car. If you can stretch your budget a bit more, you can choose an SUV from a higher segment, but the Tiguan does offer a great deal of premium value.
