At 9.15 a.m. (local time) the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 333.00 points, or 1.97 percent, from Tuesday to 17,263.84, Xinhua reported.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 27.67 points, or 2.01 percent, to 1,403.19.

Gainers were led by chemicals, insurance and iron and steel issues.
