A delayed GST is better than a flawed one: Goyal

“Even if GST is not passed in Parliament, we will find another way to bring the benefits of law so that industry and business does not suffer,” Mr Goyal said in a tweet. However, he did not elaborate on the alternate ways. The finance ministry had earlier expressed hope that the Goods and Services Tax regime, the Constitution amendment Bill for which has been stalled in the Rajya Sabha, will be rolled out in 2016.
On Saturday, Congress leader Anand Sharma had said that the April 1 deadline for rolling out GST will not be met “even if the trinity of Gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh — descend on earth”, as the government has not yet completed the preparatory work for the new indirect tax regime.
Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P. Chidambaram, however, said that he agrees with finance minister Arun Jaitley that a delayed GST Bill is better than a flawed one, contending that the present Bill is “flawed”.
“Agree with FM @arunjaitley. A delayed GST is better than a flawed one. Present GST Bill is flawed,” he said in a tweet, a day after Jaitley indicated at a Ficci gathering that passage of GST Bill may not be possible in the Winter session of Parliament and that a delayed Bill is better than a flawed one.
Chidambaram asked the government to accept three “weighty objections of the Congress so that the Bill could be passed. The Congress has dema-nded that there should be a cap on the GST rate and it should be part of the Constitution Bill, which Mr Jaitley says cannot be done.
