To recruit 3,000 medical transcriptionists across India in 2 years

Hyderabad: US-based Nuance Communications Inc, which is largely into medical transcription business, is looking to double its employee count in the city where the Nasdaq-listed company has opened its new office on Tuesday.

Across India, the company is gearing up to recruit 3,000 medical transcriptionists (MTs) over the next two years, taking its employee count in the country to around 7,000 from the current 4,000. Presently, its Indian operations are spread across Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore and Mumbai, in addition to Hyderabad.

“India plays key role in our global operations. Therefore, our plan is to add around 1,500 medical language specialists (MLSs), or MTs, each year over the next two years.

Of them, about 500 people will be added in Hyderabad,” Suresh Nair, Head- India Operations, Nuance Transcription Services, told media here after the inauguration of the new office which can accommodate 600 people in three shifts. At present, about 450 people are working for the company here in the city.

Nuance invested over $7 million into its Indian operations in the last two years. “The investment has mainly gone into creation of infrastructure. Besides, we have also acquired three companies in the country,” Lane Fenner, Vice President, Global Operations, Healthcare Division, Nuance.

The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company, which realises nearly 50 per cent of its $2-billion annual run-rate from the clinical documentation services and has over 70 per cent of hospitals in the US using its services, employs as many as 12,000 MTs globally.

“Medical transcription industry has more or less remained flat in terms of growth or is registering small upswing. But our company has been clocking robust growth year-after-year, both organically and inorganically. The momentum will continue for us,” Eric Tinch, Vice President, Global Human Resources, Healthcare Division, Nuance.

Medical transcription industry took roots in India way back in 1999. The country is home to over 30 MT companies that together employ close to 30,000 people. The industry is projected to touch $1 billion by 2020 with an average annual growth rate of about 4 per cent.
