NTR Trust ropes in Uber to train 20k cab owner-drivers
NTR Trust, a not-for-profit organisation with Nara Bhuvaneswari as Managing Trustee, has inked a pact with taxi hailing major Uber on Monday to facilitate training of 20,000 unemployed people as cab owner-drivers across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over next three years.

Hyderabad: NTR Trust, a not-for-profit organisation with Nara Bhuvaneswari as Managing Trustee, has inked a pact with taxi hailing major Uber on Monday to facilitate training of 20,000 unemployed people as cab owner-drivers across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over next three years. This initiative is a part of the NTR Trust’s efforts to encourage entrepreneurship and skill upgradation in both Telugu states.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by T Vishnu Vardhan, CEO, NTR Trust, and Siddharth Shanker, GM, Uber Hyderabad, here on Monday in the presence of Nara Lokesh, Trustee, NTR Trust, and David Plouffe, Chief Advisor, Uber Inc. As a part of this MoU, NTR Trust and Uber will collaborate to provide skills training and co-create development programmes for driver partners.
NTR Trust will help source, train, screen and facilitate seed funding and bank linkages for youngsters, who will go on to become micro-entrepreneurs on the Uber platform.
Both the entities will reach out to potential candidates through awareness programmes and mobilisation drives. “We have been working for the last two months to make this a reality and this is a historic moment.
We will work with Uber to put 30,000 drivers on the roads in AP and Telangana over the next three years. In some sense, this is equal to having two to three major industrial hubs coming up in the two states,” Nara Lokesh, said at the MoU signing ceremony.
He further said: “We strongly believe at the trust that we need to extend helping hand to bring people out of poverty. We have done various models and met with limited success over the past 10 years.
With Uber on board, we are confident that we will get it right,” he stated. Speaking on the occasion, Siddharth Shanker, GM, Uber Hyderabad, said that Uber would equip entrepreneurs with necessary training, access to vehicle financing, technology and digital innovation.
“Uber is deeply committed to encouraging micro-entrepreneurship and building skilled labour in the cities that we serve. We look forward to this collaboration with NTR Trust. We’re excited to be a part of their entrepreneurial journey,” he explained.
NTR Trust had built a skill development centre over the last six months and so far, it provided employment opportunities to over 2,000 people. “At NTR Trust, we acknowledge the need to embrace innovation and technology-led solutions to empower people and create livelihood opportunities.
We are excited to partner with Uber to contribute to the economic development of the two Telugu speaking states through skills training and creation of thousands of flexible and sustainable entrepreneurial opportunities for the people”, said T Vishnu Vardhan, CEO, NTR Trust. Meanwhile, NTR Trust has handed over new Uber cabs to some owner-drivers at the event.
