Hyderabad: Mobile devices maker DataWind Inc is gearing up to establish a manufacturing facility on the Hyderabad outskirts, with an investment of about Rs 100 crore. The Toronto Stock Exchange-listed company is setting up the new plant through its Indian arm Datawind Innovations which has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the plant with Telangana government on Thursday.

The new facility, which is expected to start production within 90 days, will generate 500 jobs in the first phase of its operation. It will have a capacity to produce 20 lakh units of tablets and smartphones per annum, catering to the growing demand of low cost mobile devices in the country.

“We are excited to announce the expansion of our operations in Telangana. In addition to empowering citizens with affordable technology and internet access, we are committed to the communities where we operate by generating local jobs,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, President & CEO, DataWind.

The Telangana facility will be the second plant for DataWind in India with the first one located in Amritsar city. It has annual capacity of 3 million units. The Information Technology Electronics and Communications (ITE&C) Department, Government of Telangana, and Datawind Innovations signed the MoU for the new plant in the presence of Ms Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, Canada and Jupally Krishna Rao, Minister of Industries and Commerce, Telangana.

The MoU will allow both parties to work collaboratively and cooperatively for the purpose of developing mobile manufacturing ecosystem in Telangana. “We are happy that the company who connected the forgotten billions to the digital age has decided to put up their manufacturing unit in Hyderabad.

This will boost the industrial scenario of the state and shall generate ample employment opportunities,” said Jayesh Ranjan, IT Secretary, Telangana. DataWind mission is in line with our Telangana govt mission of providing internet to each and every household in the State, he added.
