It’s absolutely wrong to classify wards on the basis of their performance or social status. It would not only hamper the academic growth of weak or average students but also bright students. Diversity is the secrecy of success in our classrooms.
There shall not be any discrimination as bright or weak as far as teaching is concerned. If the teacher finds a student is weak in certain area, he should focus on that boy or girl and train him accordingly. If students are branded as weak on the basis of their ranks, they would develop a defeatist mentality. On the other hand, the so-called bright boy will develop a tendency of superiority or arrogant complex.
Social activity in students shall be made mandatory. US and UK, though capitalist countries, follow a system of promotion of social activity in the students up to graduation level as a must.
All students shall work in a hospital and help providing succor to the needy patients. They should help physically-disabled people to cross roads. They must work in orphanages or old age homes; help the bed-ridden old people. All of this work will be counted during their interviews when they seek entry into professional courses.
The students will be primarily asked two questions: What kind of social work you have done in the last ten years or so and why do you opt for this (engineering/medical or any professional) course and what will you do after its completion. In this way, a certain degree of social responsibility will be developed in the students. Similarly questions will be framed on the reading habit, sports and games etc. If any student lacks in any of these issues, he or she will be blacklisted by the government for those courses. Finding that this methodology is quite appreciable in the all round development of a student, Singapore has adopted this and China is now in the process of adopting it.
Ours is a marks-based, ranks-based system which helps in no way in the development of a child. There are many parameters in every student which need to be nurtured. We cannot create interest forcibly on any subject in students. We can slowly adopt some positive features of US system so that our students will also become socially responsible. In that way, we can reduce the segregation of students in schools and colleges which has been rather systemic in our society.
