She isn’t what Manu described in his ‘Manusmriti’. In fact the woman dispels all the conventional portrayals. A tomboy who smokes, drinks parties hard, ‘Happy Days’ fame actress Sonia Deepthi’s character in a new short film ‘Respect Doesn’t Stop @ 9’ questions the rampant moral policing. Released a day before International Women’s Day, the video went viral on YouTube. It garnered more than a lakh views with a fair share of bouquets and brickbats and has won the hearts of many including the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Ram Gopal Varma.

Penned by Megha Wali and produced by Sadhvi Virkar and Megha, the 2.34 minute video is about a woman who spends her time drinking, smoking, browsing through porn, chatting and hanging out with boys. The video has a strong message at the end, where the actress in her monologue says, “We women have the right to celebrate to our curiosities as well. Just because we are experimenting something that is classically unconventional does not mean that we are asking to be judged.

We women follow our dreams. We women can have an opinion. We women can live it up. We women can do everything we want. But we are still not asking for it.” Ram Gopal Varma was the first celebrity who was in love with the short film, “Most beautiful statement ever from a woman about women. All those repressed politicians and moral upholders should see. Woman should have as much freedom as a man to live life the way she wants to live. I luv this short for depicting that (sic),” he tweeted.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, posted the video link on twitter and wrote, “A friend sent me this short reflection.” Shot in Country Club, the short film also features Srikanth Raghava, M Sameer, Sadhvi Virkar, Kushalpreeth, Sai Priyatham, Sumanth and Adhvaith Akhil. As the description to the video reads, “For all the ‘guardians of Indian culture’, who think that women should stay at home, here's a must-watch,” the short film is not to be missed.
