Mumbai: Internationally acclaimed Marathi film ‘Fandry’ is to be aired on Zee Talkies, this Independence Week. Directed by Nagraj Majule, the film is also a recipient of Best Film at the 61st National Film Awards. The story focuses on caste discrimination, a social issue that is still prevalent in India today. Which brings to the fore the question – after 68 years of an Independent India, are we really free?

‘Fandry’ essays the life of a teenage boy from a small village in Maharashtra, and the barriers he faces on a daily basis due to the prevalent cast system. The film has been praised for the story, brilliant performances and a background score complements each scene. The film has also received recognition from various Bollywood personalities like Aamir Khan, Anurag Kashyap, Rasika Dugal, Atul Kulkarni amongst others.

Synopsis: Love, the most beautiful emotion in all living creatures that God has made knows no bar, caste or boundaries, is the central theme of Fandry. A young lad (Jabya) falls in love with his classmate. Incidentally, he belongs to a lower caste, a family below the poverty line which does all sorts of jobs in the village to survive like catching Pigs and the girl belongs to a higher caste. His parents are working hard to arrange money for their daughter's wedding while Jabya is collecting money for new clothes to impress the girl. Fandry is a story of his aspirations, quest, sorrows, anguish and frustrations. Fandry also touches upon the age old monster of Caste System which is still lurking large upon the society.
