Dasari Narayana Rao, a well-known Telugu film director, actor, writer and former Union minister of state for coal died here on Tuesday after prolonged illness. He was 75. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Rao celebrated his 75th birthday on May 4 this year. 

Hyderabad: Dasari Narayana Rao, a well-known Telugu film director, actor, writer and former Union minister of state for coal died here on Tuesday after prolonged illness. He was 75. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Rao celebrated his 75th birthday on May 4 this year.

He has been hospitalised for a while now. He was put on haemo-dialysis after his condition worsened after a gastric ballon surgery was performed about three days ago. His condition turned serious on Tuesday as heavy fluctuations were noticed in his blood pressure and sugar levels.

It may be mentioned that Dasari was admitted to KIMS after he complained of difficulty in breathing. He was later discharged from the hospital. Since then, his health continued to deteriorate.

Dasari was born on May 4, 1942 in Palakollu in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Dasari, who belongs to politically powerful Kapu community in Andhra, entered into active politics in early 2000 through the Congress party.

He was considered to be close to AICC president Sonia Gandhi and was elected to Rajya Sabha. He became the minister of state for coal in Manmohan Singh government during the UPA-II regime.

Rao holds the Guinness Book of Records for directing 125 films in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. He also received two National Film Awards, nine state Nandi awards, and four Filmfare awards.

Some of his famous films include "Premabhishekam", "Megha Sandesham", "Osey Ramulamma" and "Tata Manavadu". Rao had planned to make a biopic on the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Several film and political personalities Mohan Babu rushed to KIMS hospital. Minister for Cinematography Talsani Srinivas Yadav also went to the hospital and paid his tributes to Dasari and said his death leaves a void that can never be filled.

The minister said that the body of Dasari would be kept in premises of film chambers from 10 am on Wednesday for the industry and his fans to pay homage. Later in the afternoon his last rites would be performed at his Moinabad farm house with official honours.

Governor ESL Narasimhan in his condolence message said ,"I am deeply shocked at the sudden demise of Dasari Narayana Rao, eminent Telugu film director and former Union Minister. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family."

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said that Dasari did a lot of service to the Telugu film industry and also played a key role in politics. He left an indelible impression in the fields of politics and film industry. The noted film director was one of the film personality who helped in shifting Telugu film industry from Chennai to Hyderabad.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Union Ministers M Venkaiah Naidu, Sujana Chowdary, former Governor for Tamil Nadu K Rosaiah other leaders condoled the death of Dasari.
