Popular veteran Kannada actor and former central minister Ambareesh (Malavalli Huchche Gowda Amarnath)died on Saturday due to a cardiac arrest. The politician-actor was 66.

Ambaressh had not been in good health for the past few months and was suffering from kidney ailments. He had acted in about 200 films and was popularly known as the 'Rebel star' of Kannada cinema, especially after his film ‘Chakravyuha.’

He won a national award for his debut film ‘Nagaravaahu’ way back in the year 1972.

Ambareesh is survived by his wife Sumalatha and son Abhishek. He married actress Sumalatha in 1991. They acted together in films like ‘Ahuthi’, ‘Avatara Purusha,’ ‘Sri Manjunatha’ and the national award winning film ‘Kallaragi Hovali,’ in 2006.

His death has come as a severe shock to his friend Superstar Rajinikanth. The Tamil actor took to Twitter to mourn the death of his friend along with other south stars.
