Drama set in rural India around menstruation “Period End of Sentence” has made it to the 91st Academy Awards shortlist in the Documentary Short Subject category.

The film’s executive producer Guneet Monga shared the happy news with everyone over this post on Instagram. She wrote, “Waking up to this shortlist!! So proud and soo exciting. Watch out for “Period. End of Sentence” our short documentary directed by @raykaz shot by @samdavisdp produced by school girls of Oakwood , Melissa Burton , @lisataback , Garrett. I am so humbled to be a part of the producing team. Award winning filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi has directed the short film, which has been produced by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment.

The documentary is set in Hapur village outside Delhi, where women lead a quiet revolution as they fight against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation. For generations, these women did not have access to sanitary pads, which lead to health issues and girls dropping out from schools. When a sanitary pad vending machine is installed in the village, the women learn to manufacture and market their own pads, empowering their community. They name their brand “FLY”.

Other documentary shorts to have made it to the shortlist are “Black Sheep”, “End Game”, “Lifeboat”,”Los Comandos”,” My Dead Dad’s Porno Tapes”, “A Night at the Garden”, “63 Boycott”, “Women of the Gulag” and “Zion”.
