AP to promote IVF method for increasing cattle population
The Department of animal husbandry and Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) to increase the population of cattle in the State.
Vijayawada: The Department of animal husbandry and Fisheries, Government of Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) to increase the population of cattle in the State. So far, embryo fertilization is confined to humans in Andhra Pradesh. Henceforth it will be extended to cattle also for rapid growth of its population which is beneficial to lakhs of farmers and rural economy of the State.
The Animal husbandry department officials have made arrangements for the healthy reproduction of cattle. The state has a cattle (cows and bulls) population of 47.16 lakh and buffalo population of 64.62 lakh. As part of the IVF method for reproduction of cattle, the animal husbandry department will collect the embryos and semen from the cows and bulls for fertilization.
So far, the department had collected 20,000 dosages of sperm from the bulls across Andhra Pradesh. Initially, the department will try to reproduce the high merit breeds like Ongole breed, Gir breed (Gir forest, Gujarat) and Sahiwal (North Indian cows) cattle in the State. These cattle are considered high yield cows and will be given priority for reproduction through IVF fertilization.
Joint Director of animal husbandry G Gabriel told The Hans India that Andhra Pradesh is one of the pioneering states in the country in adopting the IVF method for cattle reproduction. He said Chattisgarh is the first State in India in adopting the IVF system and Andhra Pradesh will be second State to follow.
He informed that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu had visited the animal husbandry office in Vijayawada in November and checked out the arrangements being made for the adopting the IVF method. The animal husbandry department has adequate equipment and facilities for preserving the semen and embryos in the labs in the State. Embryo fertilization is one of the important ways for the reproduction of cattle, which is very important to the farmers as well as to strengthen the rural economy.
