The hawkers are making a brisk sale of the shoots in the sea coast from Konapapapeta in Kothapalli mandal to Perumallapuram in Tondangi mandal of East Godavari district Women of at least 15 villages are engaged in the brisk sale of the palm shoots. The hawkers sell the shoots along the beach road. Those travelling by vehicles on Kakinada-Visakhapatnam road stop their vehicles en route to buy the shoots. A bunch of three or four shoots are sold for a price of Rs 10.

The palm shoots are boiled and later roasted in a pot. At some places like Konapapapeta, the shoots are roasted directly placing them in fire. The roasted shoots taste better compared to the boiled ones. The shelf life of the boiled shoots is just one day whereas the roasted ones have a longer shelf life. The roasted ones are exported to far off places.

The nutritional value of the palm shoots is high. It has starch up to 60 per cent and is rich in fibre. The fibre is easy to digest. Women hawking palm shoots expressed concern over decreasing palmyra trees because of rapid industrialisation. Depending on the season, 100 palm shoots are sold between Rs 100 and Rs 250. The hawkers express satisfaction over the sale of the palm shoots.
