Palamur prodigy proves poverty no bar
If one has willpower and determination, then nothing and no one can stop them from achieving their goals. Making willpower her tool, Lakshmi from Mahmadabad in the district, has proved that poverty is no hindrance in achieving goals.

Her perseverance helped her in making a device for deaf and dumb which got her a rare honour of participating in the Science Inspire Exhibition at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
The eldest of two daughters, the first year Intermediate student of the Government Junior College at Yenmangandla in Nawabpet mandal of Mahbubnagar district, has proved to be jewel in the perennially drought-hit district. Balamani, working as a labourer is educating her daughters after her husband, Lakshmaiah died. Lakshmi is not only a meritorious student, but also innovative.
Using her knowledge, she has designed two devices, one of which resembles a wristwatch which helps in calling ten disabled persons at a time, by pressing a button on their hands. This results in vibrations in the watch held by a disabled person which enables them to respond to a call. Lakshmi told The Hans India that the device paved way for easily calling a deaf and dumb woman, without having to touch her.
She says it will benefit women working in different offices/organisations. Noticing her keen desire to make mechanical devices, her teachers encouraged Lakshmi to design them. She displayed the hearing machine for the first time in the district-level science exhibition while studying SSC last year in Yenmangandla. The machine was then selected for display at the State level in November.
It brought her the second prize. She then went on to display her merit at the national-level science exhibition in New Delhi, on December 10 and 11, where her device was adjudged the best among the 650 entries in the competition. Lakshmi received the award from Science and Technology Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan. She received a call from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to participate in the Science Inspire Exhibition on March 4.
Despite her phenomenal display of meritorious scientific temper, nothing worthwhile has been done by the State government to accord her recognition. However, Lakshmi told The Hans India, that she feels extremely proud to be a part of the science exhibition . “I find poverty a hindrance. The government should come to the rescue of poor students like me”, she said.
Being an Intermediate student has not deterred her from evolving devices, thanks to the encouragement by her teachers. Since receiving awards, she has been receiving invitations from various areas to participate in science exhibitions. Her teacher Sridhar has appealed to philanthropists to help the student, who has overcome the obstacle of poverty.
