People hunt for horse manure
Though this is funny, it is a fact. The price of horse manure is much more than that of cement. Now the beneficiaries of Individual house hold toilets under Swachh Bharat Scheme are running hither and thither to get horse dung to construct a toiled in their home.

Actually this is a technical necessity, that we should dump around 10 kg of horse dung in the septic tank while constructing individual household toilets. The dung is a birth place of bacteria which eats the human waste and helps to decompose it. If horse manure is not used, the human waste will not compose and soon the tank will be filled. So, it is mandatory to dump the manure in septic tanks.
Now as hundreds of people are coming forward to construct toilets in their homes as the government is also promoting the scheme as a part of Swachh Bharat and giving a grant of Rs 15,000. The irony is that while cement, sand and bricks are available in the market but horse manure is hard to find. It’s easy to get cattle dung as most of the villagers have cattle but none of them have horses.
So now people are on the hunt for horse manure and after much struggle they are purchasing around 15 kg of dung for about Rs 350. Some of those who used to run jatkas, tangas are still keeping the horses are now making a quick buck selling the manure at Vizianagaram. Now people are making advance payment to get the required quantity after a few days!
Cement costs around Rs 350 per bag and sand is available at nearby the rivers and streams and public can get it without paying anything. Bricks are also available at an affordable price but the only hurdle is getting dung.
K Krishna of Kothapeta area in Vizianagaram said “I used to run a jatka for the past few years and now I am unable to run it as my horse and I have become old. So still I am feeding this animal and selling the dung to the public. Of course this is not an income for me, but I feel happy to know that my horse dung helps in construction of toilet in every house”, he said.
K Surapunaidu of Komarada Mandal said “I brought the horse manure from Vizianagaram. I had to travel 200 km to get it. I spent Rs 350 for a bag of 15 Kg. The manure costs more than the bag of cement, he said.
