Satavahana period earthenware unearthed in Kotilingala excavations
First phase diggings has commenced at the 15-acre historical site of the Satavahana period at Kotilingala, Karnamamidi mandal, Hazipur mandal in the district on Tuesday. District Collector RV Karnan, MLA Diwakar Rao, and director of the department of archaeology, Visalakshi, initiated the excavation at the location.
Mancherial: First phase diggings has commenced at the 15-acre historical site of the Satavahana period at Kotilingala, Karnamamidi mandal, Hazipur mandal in the district on Tuesday. District Collector RV Karnan, MLA Diwakar Rao, and director of the department of archaeology, Visalakshi, initiated the excavation at the location.
Excavation will be carried out on an area of four acres in the first phase. Earthenware products of the Satavahana period (230 to 450 BC) like pots and bricks used to build homes were discovered in the digging which began with deployment of over 100 workers.
The capital of Satavahana rulers, Kotilingala, is 13 km away from the historical site at Patigadda. While Kotilingala is on the other bank of River Godavari, Patigadda is located on this side of the river. “Apart from the evidence mentioned in historical books, evidence found in inscriptions prompted us to dig deep for artifacts,” Archeology assistant director Sankar Naik said.
The excavations will continue for 45 days and the archeological experts are confident of unearthing most valuable historical evidence in future. Going by the availability of pots, round shaped stones, bangles and pearls, the archeology experts predict the site to be a habitat during the Satavahana period.
They are hopeful of discovering coinage, weaponry, inscriptions explaining the rural lifestyle of the people, rural architecture etc., during the days to come. The officials are making arrangements to preserve the findings during excavation at the archaeology museum in the district.
