Tirupati: Technology has become indispensable for urban life. If it is effectively packaged and used, the situation may not be all that different in rural areas as well.

In today’s world, technology has become an essential part of life, be it for mobile user, banking, medical, education and information sectors or whatever. Now, thanks to some initiatives, farmers are beginning to reap the benefits of technology.

Across the country, among 13 veterinary universities, Sri Venkateswara University has blazed a trail in the use of IVRS towards toll free number for the benefit of the farming community. Farmers can avail of advisory services on toll free number 1800-120-4209. It has been functioning for the past one month, with an IVR system support system, consisting of telephony equipment, software applications, a database and supporting infrastructure.

The university has been providing online help to farmers in six specialisations: reproduction in cattle, diseases and control, production and management, fish farming, milk and meat products. For each of the specialisations, the university has appointed two senior professors to advise farmers round the clock on cattle management and related problems through the interactive voice response system (IVRS).

An IVRS system accepts a voice telephone input and provides appropriate responses in the form of voice call back. Besides, IVRS applications bring in efficiency in terms of call handling. An IVRS application provides per-recorded voice responses for appropriate situations and access to relevant data. Potentially it can record farmers’ requests and concerned subject experts’ voice inputs for subsequent handling. The use of IVRS allows callers’ queries to be resolved without a live agent. If callers do not find the information they need, calls will be transferred to an adviser.

The approach allows live advisers to have more time to deal with complex interactions with farmers. This system ensures the correct application and language executed. A single large IVR system can handle calls for thousands of applications, each with its own phone numbers and script. This toll free IVRS system has been created and coordinated by Dr GRK Sharma, head, extension department.

Similarly, the university has created one cattle management app for the use of farmers. This app provides information on all types of diseases as well as remedial measures to help protect cattle. This will help farmers immensely.

On the IVRS toll free telephone number and app, director, extension D Srinivasulu said that there was tremendous response from the farming community. Every day we receive more than 100 calls from across AP. The university app is also very useful for cattle farming community, said Director, extension.
