With a view to creating and enhancing public awareness about the dire need to use clay Ganesh idols for worship during the upcoming Ganesh Chathurthi, The Hans India and HMTV have run focused campaigns during the past one month.
The primary aim of these exerciseswas to discourage people from opting for plaster of Paris idols, which contain chemicals that are harmful to environment. Some of these chemicals pollute the water bodies where the idols are immersed, beside harming the environment. Living beings in water bodies perish because of the pollution, which also affects people if they consume the water.
Given that Mission Bhagirathawould bringthe Godavari water to people, continued use of idols made of plaster of Paris would pollute even the river water, affecting the health of those who drink it.
Traditionally, the Vinayaka idols installed in the district are immersed in the Godavari that passes through Dandepallimandal here. Besides, immersion activities give rise to traffic problems, at times resulting in accidents. Most of these problems can be averted if people opt for clay Ganesh idols. This is the objective of the awareness programme, which has evoked a good response from the public.
Luxettipet Circle Inspector Pratap, while welcoming the initiative, told The Hans India that he would promote clay Ganesh idols while touring villages in coordination with youth organisations. The CI said that he would ensure that there were no traffic problems during the upcoming Ganesh festival.
Baki Sridhar of Dandepallimandal has been preparing clay Ganesh idols, ranging in height from three to six feet over the last two years. People who want to avoid causing harm to the environment are taking these idols. Sridhar said that he would be supplying these idols during the festival to interested persons. Local people have hailed his efforts in promoting environmental-friendly alternatives to idols that are made of plaster of Paris.
