Mulberry cultivation brings cheer to farmers
Farmers of remote Beedanipalli village of Roddam mandal in Anantapuram district have set an example for distressed farmers who want to turn around their lives even in areas hit by extreme water scarcity.

Vexed with unviable groundnut cultivation, they switched to the cultivation of mulberry using borewells and are now earning profits. Some resorted to the borewells despite not-so-encouraging flow from them. Sericulture Department officials helped the farmers raise sheds for cocoons and access subsidy.
Having implemented the officials’ advice in letter and spirit, the farmers are now reaping profits. Of the 120 families in the village, 110 opted for mulberry cultivation, practicing drip-irrigation. Each farmer has been cultivating mulberry in his farm, ranging between three and five acres.
The farmers bring CB/Voltine variety of seeds from Karnataka and sell the cocoons at Rs 450 to 500 a kg in the State’s Sidlaghatta market. The Sericulture Department personnel visit their village once in two days and tender advice. The farmers are keen to cultivate mulberry because of the subsidies they can access through the department.
