‘Yakshaganam’, ‘Burrakatha’, ‘Potharaju dances, ‘Dappu’ and ‘Puli Veshalu’, besides lilting songs and foot-tapping dances by about 200 traditional folk artistes, organised as part of the preparatory programmes for WTC, attracted wide attention and earned accolades of residents here on Tuesday.

Siddipet: ‘Yakshaganam’, ‘Burrakatha’, ‘Potharaju dances, ‘Dappu’ and ‘Puli Veshalu’, besides lilting songs and foot-tapping dances by about 200 traditional folk artistes, organised as part of the preparatory programmes for WTC, attracted wide attention and earned accolades of residents here on Tuesday. As many as 16 teams presented various item involving story-telling and folk songs with traditional instruments.

Their spell-binding display and an enthusiastic rally were flagged off by Municipal Chairman Rajanarsu and ACP Narsimha Reddy near new the Venkateswara Swamy temple. The participants proceeded from TNGO Bhavan to Siva Garden via the old bus stand. The artistes gave a performance in the garden.

Co-convener of WTC Venumadhav Reddy, District PRO P Srinivas and District Coordinator Rangachary explained the significance of holding the preparatory programmes. Among those present were ZP Vice-chairman Ragula Sarayya, JAC leader Papaiah, District Fisheries Officer Venkatayya, District Youth and Sports Development Officer Balaiah, MPDO K Nimma Reddy and councilors.

Addressing the participants, Rajanarsu praised Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for seeking to bring to global notice the importance of Telangana dialect of Telugu through special sessions at WTC to be held in Hyderabad from December 15 to 19.

After the formation of Telangana there has been a sustained effort on the part of KCR government to give a boost to local arts, traditions and language by the government. Folk artistes who had played a significant role in the separatist agitation had been provided employment by the TRS government, he pointed out.

Rajanarsu stated that WTC programmes, with focus on literature and language, were being organised as per the suggestion of district Minister T Harish Rao and Collector Venkatram Reddy. He said that Siddipet was the birthplace of many folk artistes and literary personalities. “It is a matter of pleasure that traditional folk performances are being conducted in the district as part of the preparatory programmes,” he observed.
