Maqdoom set to mesmerise audience at WTC
His is a mellifluous voice that instantly strikes a chord with the audience. And, it’s hard to imagine that someone who had failed in Telugu (10th Standard) would bounce back and make waves with his panache for hosting events, playing the role of commentator and translator with equal ease.

Born and brought up in Karimabad with Urdu being his mother tongue, Syed Maqdoom’s soon became aware of the importance of Telugu. Pep talk of his father Syed Ghouse Mohiuddin inspired him to master the language. Starting off as an announcer with the Warangal Akashvani FM local radio station in the early 90s, he grew from strength to strength. He brought professionalism to his occupation. While doing this, he never neglected his studies. He holds a Master’s degree in Commerce, besides completing his LL.B.
Maqdoom’s love for Jnanpith awardee Dr C Narayana Reddy, fondly known as CiNaRe, and Ameen Sayani, one of Asia’s most celebrated radio announcer who used to present the famous Geetmala for no less 45 years, is no secret. CiNaRe was his mentor.
Speaking to The Hans India, Maqdoom said: “I learnt a lot from CiNaRe. He was not just a literary doyen, but also immensely articulate in holding a meet.” On hosting shows, he said: “Yes, it’s difficult to keep anew every time I hold a show. We need to maintain subtle changes in the commentary so that the monotony could be avoided.
Vocabulary, use of appropriate words, maintaining a sense of humour, spontaneity, style etc form the quintessence of commentary, said Maqdoom, who has the distinction of translating the speeches (live) of the likes former President APJ Abdul Kalam and former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee.
For his command of Telugu, he credits the works of Padma Vibhushan Kaloji Narayana Rao, KV Bhaskar Rao, M Nagaphani Sharma, Pervaram Jagannatham and Indarapu Kishan Rao, apart from the skills he picked up during his association with them.
He, along with Rampally Sadashiv, will represent Warangal in the WTC programmes that will get underway from Friday (December 15). The shows Maqdoom will host include Novels, Prose and Poets’ Meet (Kavi Sammelanam) to be held on December 17 and 18 at Lalitha Kalathoranam in Hyderabad.
Rampally Sadashiv, a Telugu teacher in the Dharmasagar Boys School, is the other one from Warangal who has got an opportunity to host events in the WTC-2017. Sadashiv, who shot to fame as a mimicry artiste and ventriloquist, is also a popular announcer / commentator.
