In the recent times, we have witnessed various crimes which shocked the nation. Particularly the rape incidents in Delhi and UP has made one sit up and take notice. One wonders what exactly is the cause behind such heinous crimes. People across the globe are campaigning against crimes against women. Intellectuals with vast knowledge and wisdom are debating over ways to bring down the crime rate. All such thoughts and suggestions lend hope to the future of society. Yet, the big question is how we can stop such anti-social elements. For example, if we carefully read about the Delhi rape case, all the accused in the age group of 17 to 55 were in a drunken state. Most of the other crimes reported reveal the shocking truth that nearly 90 per cent crimes were committed by those under the influence of alcohol.

Liquor or any other substance that makes a person insane should be banned in our society. No one can show any good example of drinking or taking sedative substances. The lower and middle class people are the main victims of liquor. We often read of women being harassed, tortured, beaten up and burnt alive, because the so called husband was in a drunken state and vented his anger over his poor wife and children. One must not forget that while a person drinks liquor to overcome failure or grief, his/her ability to reason stoops to such an extent that he/she gets into foolish acts instead of getting thinking to find ways to get out of the situation.
While driving accidents normally happens due to over speed, negligence, and drunken state. Recent report issued by the traffic police showed that truck, bus and car drivers hit other vehicles and motorist and passersby due to drunken state which caused death and severe injuries to the victims.
Another highly risky habit of today’s youngsters is consuming liquor to celebrate an occasion and then drive vehicles wildly which not only risks their own lives, but also others who are unfortunately present on the road that point in time. Such tragedies are often reported during New Year celebrations, cricket match wins and festivals. Now, the question is is one cannot derive happiness without liquor. Can our society not survive without liquor? How long should women remain victims of such abuse? How long should innocent people fall prey to drunken drivers?
If the government bans liquor and other sedative substances for even three months, we can surely see a decrease in crimes against women and road mishaps. But the million dollar question is if such a thing is only an illusion.
