Jilted lover throws acid on woman

Visakhapatnam: In a most brutal incident, a woman Bunga Lakshmi, (40), suffered 84 per cent burn injuries when she was attacked with acid by a daily wage earner of the same area Arjun in the wee hours of Thursday when she was asleep at her residence.

When Lakshmi raised an alarm, the accused fled the scene and the family members rushed the victim to the King George Hospital where her condition was stated to be critical. According to information, there was an extra-marital relation between Lakshmi and Arjun and recently Lakshmi severed the relationship which reportedly irked him. The victim is a widow with three children and eking out a living by doing daily work. Both Lakshmi and Arjun entered into an argument on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, district president of AIDWA K Surya Prabha and district secretary of DYFI V V Srinivasa Rao visited the KGH casualty ward on Thursday where Lakshmi was undergoing treatment.

Later they staged a protest demonstration along with the family members and relatives demanding stringent punishment against Arjun and to provide financial help to the victim's family. Surya Prabha alleged that atrocities on women were on the rise, including acid attacks, due to the inaction of the government machinery and the police. Delay in awarding punishments by the Judiciary is also one of the reasons for the spurt and the government should help the victim under the Nirbhaya Act. The DYFI leader Srinivasa Rao demanded the police to nab the culprit. He charged that there was no protection for women in tribal and rural areas.
