New Delhi: A Deputy Superintendent of Tihar Jail, along with his son, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to burn alive his daughter-in-law for failing to meet dowry demands in Mahipalpur area of South Delhi.

Police said 50-year-old Gyan Singh and his son Nitin (27) tried to burn her alive last evening. The victim has sustained 65 per cent burn injuries and has been under treatment at Safdurjung hospital.

Singh and his son were arrested last night after the SDM recorded the statement of the victim. "In her statement, the victim alleged that she was being harassed by her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law for dowry. On Wednesday evening, Singh slit her wrist with a blade and they set her ablaze by pouring kerosene oil," said a senior police official.


"The duo has been arrested and booked under Section 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty)and 307 (Attempt to murder)/34 (common intention)of Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Vasant Kunj (North) police station," he also said.

The victim's condition is serious but she is out of danger, police said.

Her brother alleged that she was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry for a long time.

"We are recording the statements of the victim's family members and further investigation is on," the official added. Police said that Singh and Nitin have been sent to judicial custody. According to Tihar authorities, both accused have been lodged in jail number 4.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by her male friend and two of his friends in a moving car before being dumped by the roadside near Nehru Place area of south Delhi.

Police said that they have detained two persons in the connection.

Police said the incident took place late on Wednesday night when the woman, a daughter of Delhi Police woman constable, was offered soft drinks laced with sedatives by the accused. "Girl along with her male friend and his friend came out for a ride. On the way, they offered her soft drinks laced with sedatives. After drinking it, the girl fell unconscious," said a senior police officer.

According to the officer the girl alleged in her complaint that she was then gang-raped and dumped near Nehru Place flyover.

"Seeing a girl is lying in an unconscious condition, an auto driver, who was passing through the area, immediately called up the police. Police took victim to a nearby hospital," officer also said.
