New Delhi: A young woman from Mizoram was found dead at her South Delhi apartment with multiple stab wounds; the man she lived with, an engineering student, has been detained by the police as a suspect, said sources.

The crime comes barely 24 hours after two men from the North East, both call centre workers, were beaten with cricket bats in the room they rent in Gurgaon near Delhi. They said the gang that attacked them shouted racial slurs at them. Three students from the northeast were allegedly beaten up in a Bangalore locality for not speaking Kannada. This is the third incident in three days.

Though hate attacks against people from the North East have been occurring with alarming frequency in Delhi, the police say that the murder in South Delhi does not seem to have any racist angle. Juliet Zonunmawi, 24, was found dead early this morning in her house in South Delhi's Munirka area, reportedly by her landlord.

"The victim was lying in a pool of blood and had head injuries," a police official told news agency IANS.

Condemning the racial attacks on people from north-east India, a student body demanded setting up of a help desk for north-easterners in all metro cities to ensure immediate help.

"The Centre should consider setting up a dedicated help desk for north-east people in all metro cities in view of the rising hate crimes our people are facing," North East Students Organisation (NESO) Chairman Samuel Jyrwa told PTI. The NESO, is an umbrella organisation of students' bodies in the north eastern states.

Jyrwa said the desk should be headed by a senior police officer or preferably an IAS officer to ensure prompt and immediate help in case of any reported hate crimes in these cities.

Expressing concern over the assault on three northeastern students in Bangalore, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said he would take up the issue with the Karnataka government for strict action against the culprits.

"I will talk to the Karnataka Chief Minister. Action should be taken. No one can discriminate against anyone on the basis of caste, creed and sect," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.
