Karimnagar: Civil Supplies officials seized 27.5 quintals of rice meant for Public Distribution System (PDS) from the house of one Ellanki Veeran Kumar, resident of Maruthinagar here, on Thursday. The rice was meant for distribution to the poor people through Ration Shops at Re 1 a kg.

According to the police, Veeran Kumar used to buy the rice at Rs 12-a-kg from various sources, which were yet to be traced, and sell the same to hotels and tiffin centres for Rs 14 per kg. Acting on a tip-off that PDS rice was illegally stocked in the house of Veeran Kumar, a team of officials, led by Assistant Grain Purchasing Officer (AGPO) Kashi Vishwanath, raided the place and seized the commodity.

The 27.5 quintals of rice was sent to the nearest ration dealers. A case under Section 6-A was registered against Veeran Kumar. Deputy Tahsildar Hari Kiran, Revenue Inspector Kiran Kumar and Vijay Kumar assisted the Civil Supplies team during the inspection.
