Hyderabad: The Task Force (South & East) police on Thursday busted a cricket betting racket by conducting raids at Charminar, Bahadurpura and Malakpet areas and arrested seven persons. The team has recovered four cell phones besides Rs 2 lakh and other equipment used for betting from the arrested members. One suspected bookie, Srinu of Miryalaguda, is absconding. Acting on specific information, Additional DCP (Task Force) N Koti Reddy constituted a special team to crack down the cricket betting racket.

The police team conducted simultaneous raids on some residential areas of the suspected members of the betting gang and arrested Pankaj Kumar Agarwal, 30, of Mehandigalli, Gulam Fareed, 25, Shaik Hassan, 26, Md Aslam, 26 and Md Hussain, all residents of Bahadurpura, G Srikanth, 24, of Kothapet and B Raja Shekhar, 26, of Vanasthalipuram.

“A cash of Rs 2 lakh was recovered from them who confessed that they were running the racket with the help of other mediators,” Reddy said. Police suspect that bookies organised betting from Hyderabad and other places through their wide network of agents by involving punters in the district.
