Hyderabad: The Task Force (East) Police in a joint operation with the Amberpet Crime Police have busted a chain snatching racket on Monday with the arrest of a notorious snatcher involved in 102 cases, under various police station limits, including Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Medak districts.


Police recovered 3.46 kg of gold ornaments worth Rs 1 crore, a KTM bike and a knife from his possession. A person who was dealing with the accused for the stolen items, K Ram Prasad of Karnataka was also arrested. Following frequent incidents of chain snatching, the Amberpet Crime Police had ordered setting up of a special team to nab the culprits.

A team under the supervision of Additional DCP (Task Force) N Koti Reddy nabbed Babar alias Baquar Akram Ali alias Baquar, 32, a native of Bidar district of Karnataka who had snatched gold chains weighing 3.46 kg in separate incidents. A total of 102 chain snatching cases were detected which included 70 in Hyderabad, 26 in Cyberabad and 6 in Medak district from 2012, till date.


Explaining the modus operandi, CP, Hyderabad M Mahender Reddy told the reporters that the accused used to move on motorbikes and target women moving on lonely stretches. On the pretext of enquiring about some address, they would snatch the chains and escape.


“Baquar, who is the kingpin of the gang, committed various offences by changing his locations. They come all the way from Karnataka, commit the offence and go back to Bidar. He was previously arrested by Mumbai Police in a cheating case but after his release from the jail, he started committing the same offence.


Baquar along with associates used to sell the stolen ornaments to Ram Prasad and Rudnoor Mallikarjun (absconding), who are goldsmiths of Karnataka,” the CP said. The CP said that repeat offenders involving in large number of chain snatchings would be booked under PD Act. “Efforts are being made to nab the other gang members - Fida Ali, Asadullah Abu Irani, Iqbal, Ashiq Hussain- who are still at large,” the CP added.
