Eluru: Ganiganti Suresh (37), a native of Madepalli village, who raped and murdered a 7-year-old girl Tiyyala Lavanya on Tuesday, died when he jumped from a railway over bridge (RoB on Friday afternoon to escape from the villagers.The ghastly crime committed by Suresh, an old criminal, came to light on Thursday after the dead body of the girl was found in a trunk box in Suresh’s house.


The irate villagers ransacked the two houses of the accused and staged a road blockade protesting over the ghastly crime and demanding stern action against the accused. The police rushed to the spot to pacify the villagers. DSP KGV Saritha also reached the village to calm down the agitators. The DSP had assured them that the culprit will be arrested.


Following her assurance, the villagers called off their protest. The accused Suresh came to Eluru town on Friday morning and was wandering at the old bus stand area, when the villagers staged a rasto roko for the second consecutive day demanding his arrest. Some youth of Madepalli village saw him and tried to catch him. However, he took to his heels and reached the Railway over bridge.


Fearing that the village youths would thrash him, he jumped from the bridge and fell on the railway track. On hearing the news, the police rushed to the spot. They tried to shift him to hospital. But already, Suresh was found dead. Meanwhile, the village youth reached the spot and found the body of the rapist on the track side.


Even as the police told them that he was dead, the furious youth beat up the dead body with their legs. SP Bhaskar Bhushan and Eluru DSP KGV Saritha visited the spot and instructed the police to register a case under IPC Section-174. Later, the police shifted the body to government hospital.
