Ganja illegal transport thrives on Kolkata-Chennai NH. Now, ganja trade has turned out to be an uninterrupted activity with limited patrolling on the national highway and smugglers have been transporting the material without any barriers.

Nellore: Now, ganja trade has turned out to be an uninterrupted activity with limited patrolling on the national highway and smugglers have been transporting the material without any barriers. Small quantities of this contraband material, is being transported through cars, jeeps and other light vehicles regularly from Vizag to Tirupati and Chennai.

  • 1 lakh kg of ganja worth `120 cr seized during the last 3 years
  • The material is being illegally transported from agency areas in Visakhapatnam district and Odisha
  • Anti-social elements from TN involved in ganja smuggling

In fact, this is also being done on the lines of red sanders smuggling where anti-social elements from Tamil Nadu who settled in agency pockets of Vizag and other plain areas close to the tribal belt have been monitoring the business by adopting the courier system.

Police recovered 50 kg of ganja from the injured persons in a road mishap which took place on the Vizag-Tirupati route late on Saturday night thus revealing the bare facts of the illegal trade. Ganja smugglers from Tamil Nadu State have been deploying local people in Vizag agency to cultivate the crop in interior parts in valley regions by providing them with latest agriculture methods.

They also monitor cutting the crop, packing, transporting and marketing in other parts of the country, thanks to the mafia gangs from Tamil Nadu who were gradually taking hold in the region. Now, the material is being transported from bordering parts of Odisha, agency mandals in Vizag such as Chintapalli, Padabayalu, GK Veedhi and G Madugula.

It was said around 1 lakh kg of ganja that costs more than Rs 120 cr has been seized by excise and police departments during last three to four years and major chunk of material reached the dens of smugglers without any hurdles. “The seized portion of the material would be around only 5-10 pc of total material being illegally transported.

Very few cases have been registered against these smugglers under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985,” said a senior official from the excise department. He admitted that the material is being transported to Chittoor and parts of Tamil Nadu. In fact, some parts of Tamil Nadu State can be reached via Tirupati.

As the police action has not been tough against smugglers in Tamil Nadu and Chittoor district, the illegal cultivation and trade of ganja has turned rampant. Some officials were colluding with these smugglers and reportedly receiving huge bribes from them. Kingpins in the trade were being ignored and only small traders and middlemen were being caught at the time of raids by the police department and during highway checks by the police personnel.

“We cannot regularly check for contraband since it will not be possible practically. We only concentrate on movements of vehicles based on tip-offs and specific communication. There should be a separate system for identifying such cases with powers,” explained a senior police official.
