Hyderabad: Cyber Crime police detectives on Monday arrested Pintu Kumar Ray (25), a postgraduate student from Howrah in West Bengal, for conniving with gangsters in cheating gullible of huge sums of money. Detective Department Joint Commissioner T Prabhkar Rao said Kumar Ray had provided his bank account number to the accused.
It helped the accused to persuade the trusting people to deposit the money in the account of the student, he said. The gangsters, the Joint Commissioner said, used to send bulk SMSes to some persons, saying they had won Koun Banega Crorepathi lottery worth Rs 25 lakh.
The culprits persuaded some of those who received the SMSes to deposit money to pay income tax and customs duty to enable them to secure lottery amount.The Joint Commissioner said Naresh, an auto driver from Hyderabad, had also received the SMS and was trapped by the offenders.
He deposited Rs 3.6 lakh in various bank accounts located in West Bengal and also in the account of accused Kumar Ray. The culprits had paid Kumar Ray 3 per cent commission. Thus he had earned Rs 5 lakh through commission,” the Joint Commissioner said.
