Hyderabad: A constable, who had fired at a city businessman with an AK- 47 in an attempt to kidnap him at KBR Park on November 19 last year, was awarded life imprisonment by a court in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The court was thoroughly convinced by the chargesheet filed by Banjara Hills Police against P Obulesu (38), which mentioned that the accused had stolen an AK-47 from the Grey Hounds Unit in Narsingi where he was part of the force.

On November 19, 2014, at around 7.30 am, Obulesu, who was working at Central Police Lines in Amberpet, attempted to kidnap industrialist K Nityananda Reddy for ransom.

Nityananda’s brother Prasad Reddy bravely entered into a scuffle with the constable and prevented him from firing. However, Obulesu then managed to escape from the scene of crime, leaving behind the weapon.

The Banjara Hills Police meticulously worked on the clues and nabbed Obulesu the next day. During interrogation, the accused confessed to have extorted Rs 10 lakh from another person in February 2014 at the same venue,

using the same weapon. He also revealed that he had stolen the AK-47 from Grey Hounds Unit in December 2013 and hid it in a remote forest in Nandyal.
