Karimnagar: A 24-year-old sword-wielding techie, who went berserk and attacked his parents, civilians and police constables here on Tuesday, was shot dead by the police. The police overpowered the techie, identified as Balwinder Singh, by shooting him.

But the bullet injuries inflicted on him proved fatal. Panic-stricken citizens ran helter-skelter until he was subdued by the police. It all began around 7 am when Balwinder Singh, a software engineer in a reputed IT company Bengaluru, took out sword from his house and attacked his father Avataar Singh and his mother first, the police said.

He then ran down from the third floor of his house and went on the rampage, attacking civilians who tried to stop him. All of them suffered bleeding injuries.

Karimnagar Deputy Superintendent of Police J Rama Rao said Balwinder Singh was drawing a salary of Rs 18 lakh yearly, but was depressed after his unsuccessful attempt at civil service examination.

At Kaman Crossroads, he went berserk by attacking more than 20 people with the sword. As he was heading toward RTC Bus Station, two policemen Malliah and Vali tried to overpower him. Balwinder Singh attacked the policemen with the sword. Vali had lost his little finger in the attack. The techie even snatched the revolver from Mallaiah and threatened to kill the latter.

When the situation went out of control, One Town Circle Inspector Vijayasaradhi rushed to the spot and opened fire at the techie, took him into custody. Balwinder Singh was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. He suffered injury on his armpit and heavy bleeding is said to have resulted in his death, according to police sources.

The condition of at least four other persons, who were injured, is said to be serious as they suffered deep wounds. Others are recuperating in the hospital.

The injured civilians and constables are also being treated in the hospital. Officer on Special Duty L Subbarayudu also rushed to the spot. In-charge DIG Malla Reddy visited the district headquarters hospital and interacted with injured persons.
