According to sources, the incident happened near Bairamalguda on Monday afternoon. Sammayya, a police constable posted in LB Nagar crime team, was heading to work after his lunch.

The constable saw two persons on a bike speeding towards a woman walking alone on the road and he followed them for some distance.

With suspicion on them as old offenders, Sammayya who was in civil dress chased them for some distance, and suddenly the bike on which the suspects were fleeing ran out of petrol and stopped on the road. Before the duo could react to the situation, Sammayya intercepted them.

The duo indulged in a verbal duel with Sammayya unaware that he was a policeman. When he told them that he was a police constable and wanted to check them, one of the offenders pulled out a weapon and pointed it towards Sammayya and asked him to stay away.

On seeing some passersby, Sammayya raised an alarm shouting that they were snatchers and sought help from the public, but none came for his rescue, but started filming the incident on their mobile phones, sources said, adding they (suspects) found it as opportunity to escape and fled with Sammayya’s bike.

A shocked Sammayya was left helpless and called his colleagues to the spot. On reaching the spot, the police recovered the bike (AP25 AM 0642) abandoned by the suspects and registered a case basing on the complaint lodged by Sammayya.

Embarrassed by the incident, the police thoroughly started investigation and found that the two persons were old offenders hailing from the Old City area of Hyderabad, sources said.

Left with no other option, the police formed more special teams to nab the accused and get back the stolen police bike.
