Disclosing this at a press conference at his office here on Monday, Central Zone DCP VB Kamalasan Reddy said in the wake of recent cases of mobile thefts, special teams were formed, which kept a watch at crowded places and nabbed three persons - Bhushan Kumar alias Rahul of Bihar, Santosh Kumar Roy of Jharkhand and Ramu Yadav of Uttar Pradesh.
Police investigation revealed that Bhushan and Santosh met in Vijayawada jail when they were remanded by General Railway Police in ganja smuggling cases. The duo became friends and after their release from the jail, they came to Hyderabad. Here, they met Ramu Yadav and a minor boy, who have been living in the city for quite some time.
In need of money, the accused stole hundreds of phones at crowded places in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Nizamabad and Nanded.
They changed the IMEI numbers of the stolen mobiles at Sultan Software Shop in Jagdish Market and sold them at cheaper rates.
“They cloned the IMEI numbers and sold the mobile phones to public at bus stations and railway stations, telling the buyers that their wallets were stolen and they needed money to go back home,” said the DCP, adding that the owner of the shop, Sultan, and the minor boy are absconding and teams are on the job to nab them.
