Visakhapatnam: Assistant superintendent of police K Sasi Kumar allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver at his office-cum-residence in Paderu in the early hours of Thursday. The 29-year-old officer belonging to 2012 IPS batch was posted to Paderu in January this year.

However, senior police officials said it was not a case of suicide. The revolver went off as the officer was checking the weapon in his chambers. The bullet hit him in his right temple.The sentry on guard heard the bullet shot from the ASP chambers around 6 am. He rushed to the spot and found Sasi Kumar lying in a pool of blood.

The officer’s service weapon was found close to him. The police personnel rushed the ASP to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Paderu was the young officer’s s third posting. His first stint was ASP (Greyhounds) and second as ASP at Allagadda in Kurnool district. Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma said it was too early to say whether it was an accident or suicide. Now that the case has been handed over to the CID, facts would be known in a few days.

However, some officers on condition of anonymity said it was a case of suicide as a note was found on the body.
Sasi Kumar graduated in engineering (BE, Electronics) from Anna University in 2008. His father Kuppu Swamy is a farmer and mother Mylammal a housewife.

Police said that Kumar was born and brought up in Satya Mangalam area of Coimbatore and his parents are now residing at Rangasamudram area in Erode district of Tamil Nadu. The ASP’s body was shifted to King George Hosptial for conducting post-mortem. His family members rushed to the city soon after they were informed by the local police officers.

Sasi Kumar never showed signs of depression, says superintendent of police (rural) Rahul Dev Sharma. He said Kumar was in touch with him regularly during last month, mostly discussing the operational issues.

“Even he spoke to me yesterday and had interaction with his subordinates. There were no visible signs of illness or depression,’’ the SP said.

Refusing to disclose the details of the incident, the SP said the entire case has been handed over to the CID soon after the incident. The CID team visited his office-cum-residence after the incident for collecting evidence.
