Hyderabad: The L B Nagar police on Friday arrested two chain-snatchers who are accused of robbing nearly 80 persons since 2014 and recovered stolen property worth Rs 45 lakh, including 1.5 kg gold.

About two months ago, an incident occurred in L B Nagar, where a policeman who chased two suspects on his bike was robbed of his bike. Police constable P Sammaiah (PC 223) who works at Saroornagar saw the duo moving suspiciously and followed them on his bike.

When the duo reached Bairamalguda, he tried to intercept them, but the duo threatened the constable and fled with his bike. L B Nagar DCP Tafseer Iqbal during a press conference at his office said, “Taking it up as a challenge our teams worked strenuously and cracked the case.

We analysed the footage of CC cameras and noticed their movements at Gulzar House, Charminar, Jahanuma and Falaknuma.”“Four special teams were formed to nab the accused.

On Thursday at 5.30 pm, the duo, Mir Musthafa Ali (37) of Jahanuma and Shaik Quayum (34) of Meerut, were seen at Alekhya towers in Bairamalguda. They were detained for questioning when they were travelling on a bike with a fake registration number,” said DCP Iqbal.

During questioning, the duo confessed to have committed 80 chain-snatchings under 25 police station limits in the twin police commissionerates. In 2013, Musthafa along with another accomplice Taj, committed three chain-snatchings.

Later, he joined Quayum and continued to snatch gold chains from women. “They have also stolen bikes and used them during offences. In the L B Nagar incident, they carried a knife to threaten the constable and stole his bike,” said the DCP.

The police recovered three bikes, some nuptial threads and gold chains weighing about 1.5 kg, two mobile phones, helmets, caps and knives, all worth Rs 45 lakh. “They have been sent to remand,” the DCP said.
