Hyderabad: A local Congress leader was shot at by a person known to him near his residence at Bowenpally area in Secunderabad here on Saturday, police said. The victim, identified as D Yadgiri, is undergoing treatment at a hospital and is stated to be out of danger.

Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said the incident was a sequel to land dispute between Yadgiri and the accused. It took place between 11 am and 11.30 am. "Yadgiri said he was shot by a person known to him. We are investigating as to what the dispute is. We found that at least two rounds were fired at him.

The victim ran into a nearby hospital to save himself. Later he came to the police station and registered a complaint," Mahender Reddy said. "The assailant also tried to chase Yadgiri and entered the hospital, but later disappeared from the spot," he said.

The Police Commissioner said the police had found two weapons -- one in a dustbin at the hospital and the other with the victim. A senior police official added that apart from the two bullets, they had also recovered four empty shells from the crime scene.

Yadgiri had a longstanding dispute with one Babu of city over a four acre land in Alwal. On Saturday morning, Babu went to Yadgiri’s home on a bike and opened fire on Yadagiri, the police said. A scuffle took place between the Babu and Yadgiri. Yadagiri suffered bruises on his chest and right thigh and snatched the gun from the assailant.

He rushed to a nearby hospital to save himself and then went to the police station and lodged a complaint. The Police Commissioner said the CCTV footage from a private hospital was recovered and it showed that the assailant had been chasing Yadgiri.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesman Mahesh said, "Yadgiri's daughter had unsuccessfully contested the recently-held elections of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)." Further investigation into the case is on.
