Even as the reports of tribal girls falling prey to guiles of the pimps or girls being kidnapped are doing rounds, a few instances of parents themselves selling their girls to traders from Rajasthan have surfaced. Take the case of Dasarath, a labourer of KRK Colony in the town. He has two daughters.

The eldest, Kajal (13), is in fifth class, while the younger one, Payal, is studying third class. The couple allegedly struck a deal with brokers to sell their daughters for Rs.50,000 to Latif and Bajrangi, who hailed from Rajasthan. They had reportedly paid Rs.20,000 as advance to the couple. The balance was to be paid at the time of moving them to Rajasthan.

The clandestine operation was exposed as a row broke out between the parents of the girls and two persons who intended to buy the lasses. The dispute arose as the two men insisted on paying Rs 20,000 only by arguing that the parent had agreed to sell their girls for Rs 40,000 only. Local residents lodged a complaint with the police and the two men were arrested along with the couple. The police shifted the girls to the Balasadan protection centre.

Dasarath, while speaking to ‘The Hans India’, denied that he had struck a deal with pimps to sell his daughters. He also claimed having no links with the pimps. Attempts to weaken the case have begun, it is alleged. But, Circle Inspector Venkataswamy promised to ensure investigation into all aspects of the case.

A girl from Indravelli mandal, who was trafficked into a neighbouring State, managed to escape from the clutches of the tormentors and returned home. The police at present are investigating into the five cases of sale of girls. Girijan Sangham leader Bhaskar, while speaking to ‘The Hans India’ expressed anguish over some girls being trapped in the red-light area of Mumbai.

There are reports of girls being transported to Rajasthan where the sex ratio is skewed. Police are blamed for failing to check trafficking in girls. The parents of the girls, who are reportedly missing, have been making representation to the government to order an inquiry into the trafficking of girls. Are the voices of these poor tribal people heard?
