Officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted enquiries and searches in connection with a case related to seizure by the city police new currency notes to the tune of Rs 95.19 lakh on December 1.

Hyderabad: Officials of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted enquiries and searches in connection with a case related to seizure by the city police new currency notes to the tune of Rs 95.19 lakh on December 1.

The ED officials took up the case after income tax referred several cases related to serious irregularities detected post demonetisation.

It may be recalled the Narayanaguda police detained five people near Minerva Hotel on the night of December 1 while they were travelling in a car along with Rs 95.18 lakh.

Those who were taken into custody by the Narayanaguda police include Om Prakash of Warangal, Rambabu of Prakasam, Narendra, Mahesh and Padmaja of Ramanthapur.

All the five persons along with the seized money were turned over to the income tax authorities for further proceedings.

However, the IT authorities referred the case to ED since they suspect several others were involved behind the irregularities and some officials in key positions might by resorting to misappropriation of the new currency notes by misusing their official capacity.

Consequently, it is learnt the ED officials have conducted searches at various places connected with the five people and found incriminating material.
