​Hyderabad: In a major gold seizure, the Air Intelligence at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) seized gold ornaments weighing 3347.52 gram, during the last week in three different cases.

In the first case, based on intelligence reports the officers of Air Intelligence Unit of RGIA kept a strict vigil on the movement of a female passenger who arrived from Dubai in Emirates Airlines Flight No EK 524 during the early hours on May 4. The officers shadowed the lady passenger and intercepted her near the exit gate, but on preliminary scrutiny of her baggage nothing suspicious was found, however, on scanning her baggage, the customs officers found thin gold sheets which were packed inside toys. The customs sleuths immediately took the passenger into custody.

Based on her information, the Shamshabad task force police arrested six other persons who were allegedly waiting for her outside the airport. The customs officials found that the gold smuggler was operating the racket from Dubai, the smuggler lured innocent passengers, who were mostly first-time travellers to Dubai and preferably female candidates, by promising jobs in Dubai. The smuggler also sponsored air tickets, said customs officials.

The passenger was instructed to look out for an elderly man who would wait outside the airport. To execute the plan four men travelled from Kerala and took assistance of two persons from Hyderabad, customs officials said. The gang reportedly, confessed that they have done four such consignments in last four days.

In the second case, on a tip off from a reasonable source, that some contraband goods are likely to be removed from flight no EK 528, which arrived in the city on May 3 at 8:10 pm, Customs Officers of the Air Intelligence (AIU) conducted search operations with the help of cleaning staff.

The customs officials collected all the disposable bags and scanned and found one packet wrapped with red adhesive tape which contained five pieces of bars weighing 615.25 gram valuing Rs 19.65 lakh.

In the third case, based on intelligence inputs indicating that gold smuggling is being carried at Ramp area, surveillance by the Customs Officers of the Air Intelligence (AIU), RGIA was intensified, on May 3, at about 12:56 am.

The AIU officials observed suspicious and nervous moments of one ground handling staff and also observed the person throw one packet in the dark area beneath Aero Bridge near Parking Bay No 56L, following which the person tried to run away from the area.

The officers recovered the packet thrown by the accused and 14 yellow metal bars weighing 1632.4 gram valuing Rs 52.13 lakh were found.
