Amid much enthusiasm, a three-day Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN), 2016 convention was kicked off on Saturday at the Suncity School here, held under the aegis of its Gurgaon chapter.

GURUGRAM: Amid much enthusiasm, a three-day Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN), 2016 convention was kicked off on Saturday at the Suncity School here, held under the aegis of its Gurgaon chapter.

Addressing the delegates, chief guest and noted jurist Subodh Markandya said that India had come a long way since its Independence. “I am enthralled to see children of today. Youngsters today are very keen to learn, talented and vibrant and platforms like these should reach out to each and every nook and corner of our country,” he said.

Laying stress upon the core areas of concern – needed to be discussed, Mr. Markandeya said that gender equality is the utmost important factor for the progress of any nation. “We need to give our women equal opportunities. We’ll have to make regional balance in the society along ensure the mass education and employment, to make our country developed,” he said, adding, “We also need to take proper care of our environment, heritage and water sources.”

Featured with eight different committees and councils, the conference allowed some 400-odd school level debaters of the 6th grade to 12th grade from different schools – including Aravali International School (Sector 85), Aravali International School (Sector 43), Ryan International School (Faridabad), Blue Bells Model School, Alpine Convent School, Bhatnagar International School, Scottish High International School, Manav Rachna International School and Billabong High International School, besides representatives from Venkateshwar International School, Pathways School, KR Mangalam (GK-II) and Amity Law College – to don the hats diplomats and law-makers from all over the world and promised to serve as an enriching learning experience for one and all.

The Suncity School Principal Mrs. Rupa Chakravarty, in her keynote address said that IIMUN 2016 would be an extremely important learning experience for students, wherein they understand current affairs, debate techniques and research skills and subsequently giving them a holistic learning experience.

Giving further details, she said that the different councils had different current agendas of discussion, including UNEP for global warming, DISEC for ISIS, Security Council for reforms in UN Security Council, ECOFIN for use of cryptocurrency, Lok Sabha for Article 370, Joint Crisis Committee for reworking the Indo-China War of 1962, Intelligence Committee for meeting of the intelligence agencies of different nations and IP for coverage of the conference.

The attraction of the opening ceremony was the eye-catching performances of Piyush Chauhan and Preeti Sharma (the runner-up of Dance plus season-2) and The Question Mark Crew, the runner-up dance plus season-2), which enthralled the audience.
